Dear District Residents:

Summer is coming to a close and we are ready to begin a new school year. The first day of school for students will be Thursday, September 4th , with a full day of classes for grades 1 – 12 and a modified schedule for kindergarten students. Please note the information in this issue regarding bus routes. In spite of the recent flood we are all set to open. Our cleaning and maintenance staffs have worked very hard and our schools look beautiful. Many staff and community members have contributed to this effort and all are to be commended for a job well done!

The media has given considerable coverage to our flood losses, so I’m sure you are wondering how we will replace items and repair damages. We have begun the process to apply for Federal Emergency Management Aid (FEMA) and expect to hear our status in the next couple of weeks. Our biggest project will be to replace the new Middle School gymnasium floor, estimated to be about $72,000. Our insurance coverage is minimal, so we are aggressively exploring all funding options. We will keep you informed as our plan develops.

The Board of Education recently set goals for 2003-04, and one of these was to improve communications to the community. We are happy that we passed our budget, yet recognize that your concerns need to be heard and addressed as we work together to provide a quality education for our children. Please watch for future information on how you can be involved!

Enjoy these remaining summer days and we look forward to the return of our students on September 4th!

 Sincerely,
Lucinda Miner
Interim Superintendent of Schools
